Nissan expands partnership with Renault and Mitsubishi to launch new electric cars and rebadged SUVs (Instagram @nissan)
Nissan is expanding its partnership with Renault to renew its vehicle lineup by introducing its own versions of the French brand’s models.
After confirming that the new Micra will be based on the Renault 5, the automaker will also launch a version of the compact electric Twingo, developed by Ampere, a subsidiary of the Renault Group.
Although these models will feature distinct design elements, they will remain closely linked to the original versions. Additionally, a derivative of the Twingo will be launched by Dacia at an even more affordable price. Interestingly, Nissan has decided to halt its investments in Ampere despite relying on it for these new releases.
The Renault-Nissan alliance is undergoing changes, including reducing cross-shareholdings and selling Nissan’s stake in Renault’s Indian operations. In addition to electric models, Nissan is also expected to launch a plug-in hybrid SUV based on the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, rebadged as the Rogue in the United States.
This model-sharing strategy aims to speed up launches and cut costs while the company works on developing the next-generation Rogue, scheduled for 2026. This new model will feature E-Power technology, a system in which the combustion engine generates electricity to power the electric motors.
Nissan believes this approach will help stabilize the company financially, allowing it to invest in more exciting models in the future, such as a potential return of the Silvia. The company’s head, Ivan Espinosa, has already confirmed that the iconic GT-R will make a comeback, but for now, the focus is on strengthening the core portfolio, including SUVs and the next-generation Leaf, which will now be a crossover.
